Kenyan Engineering Registration Board (ERB) Deny Accredition to 47 Engineering Courses in Public Universities

The fate of the students pursuing some of the engineering disciplines in Kenya, got a setback after their respective disciplines were declared null and void by the Engineering registration Board of Kenya.

This was subject to submission of the courses for accreditation mid last year by each respective universities. It came after a renewed exercise by Kenyan government to its education sector with the aim of realizing of vision 2030. 5000 engineers are needed to attain vision 2030. The board said the degrees were rejected because of their poor eminence curriculum, lack of lecturers, replication of the programmes, and lack of expert focus on the various degrees offered by this universities. The board also cited that some of the offered courses were being conducted by technicians and other less qualified staff.

With all this, then where lies the future of some of our Kenyan engineers? A traumatizing question that is in the mind of each affected Kenyan student.

Its terrible that the university should subject one to 5years of academics and huge amounts of school fees then eventually ERB refuses to register them. It instead requires them to go back to school, do a patch up course for a year and pay more so they can convert their degrees to other accredited degrees.

The universities should get its acts right and apologize to the innocent and determined students . They should go for the corrective measures to make the disciplines worthy of pursuing.

I see engineering as a dynamic field hence its not the same as it was decades ago. So dynamic it is that we even have cloud engineers in the world today. ERB should therefore be dynamic. However, engineers should be properly trained at all costs. Which is cheaper for our country? Importing Chinese expatriate engineers or hiring qualified lecturers to teach students? We should all remember that these are not only Kenyan engineers we are training but their experience will be required worldwide. Lets therefore not expose the world to risky engineers.
