Bachelor of Architecture/Architectural Studies and Possible Areas of Employment

Architecture/Architectural studies degree is among the most rewarding degrees in Kenya. Architects design buildings and other structures. Architecture is therefore about conceptualising designs that reconcile and optimise these aspects to enable construction to proceed. Architects collaborate with engineers and other design professionals.

The course has a duration of 6years. However, a degree in architectural studies does not guarantee professional recognition. A graduate must work under a registered architect for one and a half years. One must also sit and pass professional exams given by the Board of Registration for Architects and Quantity Surveyors inorder to be licenced. A licenced architect, after gaining experience may take increasingly responsible duties like managing of whole projects.

Rarely would you hear of an unemployed graduate architect (according to sources). Opportunities come in ones young career. Architects can work as (but not limited to) designers, drafters, managers, consultants e.t.c. A strong employment market for architects exists in East Africa and substantial areas of Southern Africa.

Some well known Architectural firms include:- Mutiso Menezes International, Axis Consulting Architects, Adventis Inhouse Africa, J.S Kalsi & Associates among many others.

The course is offered in JKUAT, University of Nairobi and Kenya Polytechnic
