Bachelor of Biostatistics/ Bioinformatics.
Bachelor of Biostatistics/bachelor of Bioinformatics is a newly introduced degree program in Kenyan Universities.
Bioinformatics is the fusion of biology and computer science i.e computational biology , and a degree in it prepares you for fields like genome research, molecular biology and information technology. As a bioinformatics student, you'll learn to take biological data and create computer models and programs.
It blends elements of Biology, biochemistry, chemistry, statistics and some computer programming to come up with data on various issues in biology. For instance, if one wanted to investigate the
spread of cholera, or it's causes in a certain area, then they would need a biostatistics/bioinformatics professional.
The data collected from the field is input into a computer, and then a computer program is run to draw conclusions from the research.Bioinformaticists often work in academia or the pharmaceutical industry, studying new genes, helping develop drugs or advancing our understanding of DNA. There are of course other areas where the skills of bio-statisticians are needed, but it is along the medical/ health or related areas. Your work will almost always be some form of a research. Possible employers could be KEMRI, Ministry of health, hospitals and private research laboratories.
